Voie Verte Cycle Path, Oradour sur Vayres to Chalus

 

“Voie Verte des Hauts de Tardoire” is a cycle path suitable for the whole family that runs a distance of 13 kilometres between Chalus and Oradour sur Vayres with bars and restaurants at either end and picnic spots along the way so you can make a leisurely day of it in the Dordogne sunshine.

Chalus is the home of the Chateau de Chalus, most famous for the death of King Richard the Lionheart who died there from a crossbow wound fired during a siege of the castle in 1199.

For fans of Geocaching, there are currently 9 geocaches to discover on this route!

 

Kayak on the Tardoire River in Montbron

Less than 20 minutes away is ‘ Maison de Canoe’ Kayaking Centre in Montbron. Choose your start and end points along the picturesque river Tardoire taking in hidden Chateau, Prehistoric Grottos, Menhirs and Watermills beautiful hidden as well as numerous wildlife including kingfishers and Koipoo.

This is usually a relatively gentle winding river with Kayak chutes for a bit of added excitement to get you past the gentle waterfalls and with a choice of double or single kayaks they can cater for all the family and all abilities. You will be transported to your chosen start point by minibus, with a choice of routes from 3km-17km and  collected at the end of your journey.

Open from 10am-8pm every day of the school holidays this aerial tree climbing activity centre ( similar to Go Ape) works for the whole family. For the daring and not so daring there are 7 different aerial courses with 90 possible routes for children and adults with the grand finale being the zip line across the lake for those who are feeling particularly brave. With 3 bouncy castles and play equipment for the younger ones, a bar / bistro and walks around the lake to enjoy, this is another great action day out!

 

Nontron Chateau - Gallery of Experimental Arts

The Gallery is free to explore with regular special exhibitions and the Chateau gardens are perfect for a picnic on your wander down through the levels to the river. 

 

Grotte de Villars Caves, Villars

The Grotte de Villars is an impressive cave system less than 45 minutes away with impressive stalactites and stalagmites and small prehistoric drawings.

The caves are open to visitors for guided tours every day from April to the 11th September. As well as the caves there is a small cafe, picnic area, shop and a play area on site making it well worth a day out.
